Exploring East Greenland: A Journey into the Wild

Greenland, the largest island on Earth, unfolds its majestic beauty in the vastness of the North Atlantic. This travel documentary, a collaboration with Visit Greenland, takes us on an extraordinary journey into one of the last wild places on Earth. Our exploration begins in East Greenland, a sparsely populated region with only six settlements in the expansive Ammassalik area, surrounded by thousands of kilometers of pristine coastline. Boarding a plane from Iceland, we land on the gravel runway of Kulusuk Airport, our gateway to the icy realm of Kalaallit Nunaat. From there, a helicopter ride takes us to Tasiilaq, the largest settlement in East Greenland, nestled amidst towering mountains and colorful wooden houses.

Wilderness Wonders and Glacial Giants

Tasiilaq, with its 2000 inhabitants, serves as both the administrative and economic center of the region, showcasing a blend of modernity against the backdrop of untamed nature. The surrounding landscape, dominated by rugged mountains, snow-fed lakes, and colossal icebergs drifting in the fjord, sets the scene for an unforgettable adventure. Our journey extends to remote places like Sermiligaaq, a settlement along the fjord with less than 200 residents, offering a glimpse into the traditional lifestyle of hunting and fishing. A boat excursion through the fjord brings us face-to-face with the Knud Rasmussen Glacier, a towering wall of compressed snow, reminding us of the ancient ice ages that once ruled the northern hemisphere. The narrative concludes with reflections on the challenges faced by Greenland’s changing climate and the enduring allure of this extraordinary land.
